Calvin Coolidge Bridge Information
Construction Schedule Stage 1A
Started in the Summer of 2001. - Completed
- The westbound lane on the north side of the bridge was blocked from traffic by the installation of traffic barriers (on the barriers are protective screens to protect passing vehicles from any construction debris).
- The metal bridge railing was removed and placed in storage.
- The pylons (towers) on the north side of the bridge were taken down and the decorative bas relief eagle panels were removed and stored. The pylon on the Northampton side was taken down first (this has been completed), and then the pylon on the Hadley side was taken down.
- The sidewalk on the north side of the bridge was removed.
The girders (floor beams) were extended to the north to widen the roadway. - The telephone company (Verizon) relocated its lines to the reconstructed area.
Construction Schedule Stage 1A
Started in the Spring of 2002. - Completed
- The deck on which the construction traffic moves on was removed.
- The pylons were reconstructed with the eagle panels.
- The traffic rail and the bridge railing was installed.
- The deck and sidewalk was repoured.
Construction Schedule Stage 2
Started in December of 2002. - Completed
- The eastbound lane on the south side of the bridge was blocked from traffic by the installation of traffic barriers (the barriers had protective screens to protect passing vehicles from any construction debris).
- The pylons on the south side of the bridge were taken down and
the decorative bas relief eagle panels were removed and placed in
storage. The pylon on the Northampton side was taken down first,
and then the pylon on the Hadley side was taken down.
- The sidewalk on the south side of the bridge was removed.

Construction Schedule Stage 3
Started in the Fall of 2003. - Completed
- The center lane is blocked from traffic by the installation of traffic barriers and vehicles are routed to the outside lane on the north side (for westbound traffic) and on the south side (for eastbound traffic).
- The center lane will be removed and replaced.
- The traffic barriers will be removed.
